- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup high-quality cocoa powder (Dutch-processed)
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
- ½ cup hot fudge sauce, plus extra for drizzling
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, combine hot water, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients, stirring just until combined. Fold in ¾ cup chocolate chips.
- Swirl in hot fudge sauce using a knife or skewer.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and sprinkle remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips on top.
- Bake for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then remove to wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For a healthier version, replace half the all-purpose flour with whole wheat pastry flour
- Reduce sugar to 1 cup and add ¼ cup of mashed ripe banana for natural sweetness
- Substitute applesauce for half the oil to reduce fat content
- For high-altitude baking (above 3,500 feet), reduce sugar by 2 tablespoons, increase liquid by 2 tablespoons, and increase baking temperature to 375°F
